TOMA ASKS
So, I must be the last person on earth to have joined the “eyelash curler” club. I’m lucky enough to have been graced with long lashes, so I’ve never really felt the need to do anything to them but swipe on a layer of mascara. A late-night venture to Walgreen’s (bad, bad, place for makeup-junkies) had me perusing the aisle for more things I don’t need. It suddenly occurred to me that I MUST start curling my lashes. Where this revelation came from, I have no clue.
As I pinched my eyelid this morning, it also occurred to me I have no idea how to use this contraption! So, your dear Makeup Masala is reaching out to her lovely readers for their suggestions. Tell me what works (or doesn’t) when it comes to squeezing your lashes between the mouth of this metal beast! Surely I can’t be the only one who needs help…….?!?

Ohh I’ll join this! hahah I am one lazy woman when it comes to curling my own lashes! (shame on me) but one tip that works for me is…
Pull your brows upwards before you place the curler on your eye. Still pulling the brows upwards, do the curling action and sway your hips…LOL (swaying of the hips is optional though)
It won’t pink your lids
It works for me EVERYTIME! Goodluck!
oh wow! you are lucky to have long lashes!
i’m not that very good with curlers but i got myself a shu uemura one, and i have to say that it was really one, if not the best out there! try to gather as much as you can and press onto it for a couple of seconds.. that should keep your lashes curled.
also shu uemura got this mini eyelash curler for those hard to reach lashes. i have one.. i’ll write an entry about it soon!
I try to fit the lashes between the “jaws” of the curler, starting from the base which is nearest to the lid, then going outwards. I make sure to test the fit by “testing” first with a light clamp, so incase my lids gets pinched, it would not hurt that much and i know i should adjust.
Tip for a more lasting curl: Blast your curler with hairdryer on hot setting setting for around 5 o 10 secs, then blow, until the heat is tolerable to use on your lashes. Trust me, this will prolong the curl. It would be nice to use a quality curler, i have used Revlon, Shu Uemura, and Fanny Serrano, and these 3 all work well. then use a nice mascara, i find Fasio works really well for me, as well as Loreal Voluminous
Hope that helped!!
Mary Joyce: I will try heating the curler…thank you!
Sab: I was wondering how to get the smaller lashes. I remember reading about a lot of bloggers getting the Shu Uemera mini for really cheap.
Nikki: THAT’S where I went wrong… I wasn’t putting enough “hip” into it. You are too funny! It makes sense to pull the brows up.
My favorite way to curl my lashes is to start at the base and squeeze, go up a tiny bit and squeeze again, and keep doing until you run out of eyelash. It’s kind of like a pumping type of a motion I guess, LOL, I dunno it works for me!
i also have this modelco heating eyelash curler.
i just don’t use it often, but maybe if you’re not used to the normal eyelash curler, maybe this will help you.
I really, really, really tried to be the eyelash curler type of woman, but I could never just get it right. I never achieved the super-curled look that the magazines said I would with a curler, so I ditched it. The best mascara tip I ever received was the vertical wiggle to deposit product on my lower lashes without smudges and to separate my top lashes after I’ve put mascara on them.
Sleeping, Sab and Brooklynshoebabe: Thank you all, I will try all of your great tips! Gonna practice this weekend!
look in the mirror! lol at first i tried doing it w out looking and always got pinched! one other thing yo might want to try is a “mini” eyelash curler, i have one an dlove it! LA CROSS has one for like $4!!!
good lucck! and let us know!
Vanessa, I saw that at Walgreens, I’ll grab it this weekend. Thank you!
I can’t seem to get a nice curl on my asian lashes with a regular curler. What I’m using is a heated curler called EyeCurl II… works really well for me
